When I was in my late teens I had a dilemma.
Through a series of twists & turns I came to realize that I wanted nature to play a larger role in my life.
I wanted to create a positive relationship with the environment and I also knew that I would never be able to do that unless I knew more about nature itself.
I remember one day I took a walk out on a marshland boardwalk, and really looked at nature for the very first time.
Have you ever really looked at nature?
It was so amazing to see all these new sights and sounds. It was like there was a whole new world for me to explore, which is great…
But it can also be a bit overwhelming.
How on earth was I going to learn everything there is to know?
I spent the years following that experience seeking out teachers, reading books and doing A LOT of my own nature study time.
I went on to teach kids & adults how to awaken their senses and see the world in a new way. Along my path I’ve learned a few things that can help you maximize your nature skills.
3 Simple Tips To Help You On The Path:
1. Build Your Knowledge Wide and Deep
Nature is all interconnected; so don’t ignore any bit of it. You may be drawn to learn about birds or plants, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore the trees.
There are many people out there who know everything there is to know about mushrooms, yet they would have a hard time telling you anything about birds.
There are always ways to look deeper. Keep looking for ways to take your knowledge and skills to the next level, but not at the expense of holistic awareness.
2. Find A Mentor
Good mentoring will help orient you in the direction you want to go. Sometimes just a simple question, story, or shared observation with a mentor can shave years off your journey.
Mentors are trained to see the holes in your awareness and provide practical suggestions that help you accelerate your learning process in remarkable ways.
3. Connect Your Life With Nature
The more you can integrate your life with nature, the easier it will be to feel connected with it.
One of the simplest ways to do this is to set aside a bit of time everyday to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. Growing your own food is another great way to enhance your relationship with the natural world.
These simple practices build a real desire to take care of our environment, and a sense that when we take care of nature, nature will take care of us.
It promotes ethical use of resources and greater self-sufficiency in the face of potential disasters or crisis.
